Exact details of Microsoft's plans for the Xbox Live element of its new Windows Phone 7 Series won't be revealed until its MIX conference next month, but it seems the service won't throw its doors wide open to the extent that Apple's App Store has.
"It's not about whether you have 6,000 different arcade puzzle games in a specific category on your app store," says Oded Ran, Microsoft's UK-based head of consumer marketing for Windows Phone.
"It's about how good they are – it's not about the number, it's about the quality."
It also seems that the Xbox Live element to WinPho 7 will be closely tied into the company's existing development communities.
"When we talk to developers who build games for Windows and Xbox, they tell us they would rather not rewrite everything for Windows Phone 7 Series," he says.
"What we're doing is building a platform for the key game developers, and Xbox has a very strong ecosystem."
Ran also says that Microsoft is looking to help developers by providing more consistency with the operating system, while in a clear reference to Android, he says Microsoft will also be working hard to please its handset partners.
"We have no intention of owning the stack, or competing with partners," he says. "We're not going to keep the best version for ourselves and give you a version that's a month older..."
