Hi,
i am glad to announce the IndieGO! gaming system the first time outside of my home community (commodore Amiga / AROS), exclusive on my favorite console news site since the glory dreamcast days : )
As the title says: We are working on a open gaming system called IndieGO!
www.indiego-gaming.com
You have now the chance to win one of the first beta consoles.
You will need to register at www.ares-shop.de and give us a like on our facebook page.
We plan to start the public beta in april 2013.
The Hardware is not yet set in stone but it will be enough to emulate, virtualize and to run current and NexGen PC-Games for Linux and Windows(through Wine).
Some but not all infos (since it is still WIP) can be found on out website.
In the moment we are finalizing the last bits like packaging (design) and building a distributor network.
What is special about it?
Well we are gamers like you! We now what you wan't and we don't rely on your money.. we don't melk you and we don't limit you.
The system allows to install Homebrew, you are free to buy from STEAM, Desura or our own store.
You can install games from SD-card, CD/DVD.
The OS is based on Aeros r4 (www.aeros-os.org) and it allows to run classic Amiga (CD32) games with a legal Kickstart replacement. It also allows to run classic DOS Games (with autodetection of games when CD/DVD's are inserted). And many more. It will also come with a Scene demo channel where you can enjoy the latest realtime scene demos for virtually any system you can think of.
BTW. regarding homebrew. We like the wiibrew.org page and would like to have something like this... if you think you can start something like this, feel free to contact us.
Everything we offer is legal. No rom dumps or any protected 3rd party library will be used. At least by us.

You may have already seen some scenes from Unnamed Monkey Game in the
GCW Zero presentation video. Now its official: Not only will Unnamed
Monkey Game be one of the first commercial titles available for the
GCW Zero, the GCW will actually come bundled with a playable demo. And
more yet, the GCW version will have exclusive content! One whole
world, available only to buyers of the GCW Zero!
So what is Unnamed Monkey Game? Its a platformer, with charming
4-shades-of-green graphics, proper chiptune music that will have you
humming for days, attention to detail and tight fine-tuned controls.
It is still under development, with the full version hopefully to be
released later this year, most likely following its own KickStarter
campaign.

The GCW Toolkit will soon be accompanied by a virtual device emulator with the help of QEMU (http://wiki.qemu.org/). This feature has been requested before to allow for testing OpenDingux programs and games in an emulated MIPS environment. A preview can be seen at bottom of this update.
The plan is to bring support for audio and cpu emulation (no GPU acceleration is planned for now within the QEMU environment).
We would also like to announce two new games from PawByte will be available for the GCW Zero:
* Fields of Fresh (June 2013)
* PawByte Mafia (Chibifia) (July 2013)
Demos of both games should be available around March 2013. More information at PawByte website: http://www.pawbyte.com

GCW-Zero the Open Source Gaming Handheld project on Kickstarter has now reached 200,000 Dollars with over a day left at this time, awesome news for the team and for us the Homebrew Community:
heres their latest post:
Thanks for your amazing support so far! With just under 48 hours remaining in our Kickstarter, we have a few exciting announcements for our backers! As you may already be aware, every Zero that ships will come pre-loaded with a selection of open-source and indie games hand picked by our team, and with the blessing of their authors. It's important to us that the Zero is fun right out of the box, and so today we're ready to officially add an exciting new name to the list of games that will come pre-installed on your new Zero.

Powder 117 using Akoi Meexx tileset (CC3.0-BY)
Some of you may have played POWDER, the excellent open-source rogue-like on other platforms. Originally created as a part of the GameBoy Advance home-brew scene, POWDER is the refined product of ten years of development, and its popularity has encouraged it to be ported to a wide variety of operating systems and devices. If you haven't played POWDER, it's a terrific hardcore roguelike in the tradition of games like Nethack, Crawl, Diablo (I & II), Moria, and Angband. It is a deep tactical experience, and it features a randomized dungeon each time you play. For a great description of POWDER, check out the developer's website at http://www.zincland.com/powder/
We have POWDER running on the Zero, and we are proud to have the developer's blessing to deliver it as a pre-installed game on the Zero. We think you'll love it.
POWDER joins Sqrxz3, Dink Smallwood, Puzzletube, SameGoo, Worship Vector, Spout, Astrolander, Blockrage, Biniax2, and Heroes on our current list of pre-loaded titles. Many other games will also be available at launch as easy-to-install downloads.
We also want to announce the first episode of our new video series, GCW Spotlight on Games. This is the first episode in what we hope will be an ongoing series of short videos, each shining the spotlight on an open source or indie game running on the Zero. In this first episode, we spotlight eduke32, the fantastic port of the Duke Nukem 3D engine. It features analog control, online multiplayer, and great performance on the Zero. It even supports mods! We hope you enjoy it. Hail to the King, Baby!

News via http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...handheld/posts
I wanted to take this moment to THANK YOU ALL for supporting this great console!
Thank you from me and the whole GCW team. Your support means a lot to
us, as you took our dream and made it possible.
A question has been asked whether it is still possible to make a
pledge now that we have met the goal. And the answer is YES - you can.
The more pledges we get the more you are helping us.
For those of you that haven't heard of it yet - we have introduced
stretch goals, which means more goodies for everyone who pledge at or
above $135 if the stretch goal is reached.
Let's make $200K stretch goal a reality and launch this console with
all sorts of extras for everyone.
Once again a giant THANK YOU VERY MUCH to all you guys and gals!

The most exciting Kickstarter project from a homebrew and emulation point of view is the GCW-Zero: Open Source Gaming Handheld, this project has the backing of many of the greats from the emulation scene, with 7 days left and only 8 thousand dollars to go this looks like it will go ahead and i predict it will reach at least 200,000 dollars and more.

Its been a while since ive seen a console that is as exciting as the GCW-Zero, this new console which is after support via the Kickstarter site has a wealth of talent supporting it, the main one from DCEmu perspective is Alekmaul who has posted and released many of his homebrew Games and emulators here at DCEmu.
The GCW Zero is a console that runs on Linux and is powered by a Ingenic JZ4770 1 GHz MIPS processor which means for Homebrewers like myself it should be capable of emulating old systems like Atari 2600, Nes, Snes, Megadrive up to systems like Playstation 1 and Nintendo 64 and most importantly at a speed where games are playable.
The Full specs are impressive with a decent graphics cpu, plenty of ram, loads of internal storage which can be massively added to with external memory cards. Heres the specs in full:
SpecificationsCPU: Ingenic JZ4770 1 GHz MIPS processor
GPU: Vivante GC860, capable of OpenGL ES 2.0
Display: 3.5 inch LCD with 320x240 pixels; 4:3 aspect ratio is ideal for retro gaming
Memory: 512 MB DDR2
Internal storage: 16 GB, most of which is available for applications and data
External storage: micro SDHC up to 32 GB or micro SDXC up to 64 GB (SDXC cards must be reformatted before use)
Mini USB 2.0 OTG
Mini HDMI 1.3 out
3.5 mm (mini jack) A/V port for earphone and analog TV-out
Stereo speakers, mono microphone
Accelerometer (g-sensor) and vibration motors
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n 2.4 GHz, can connect to access point or direct device-to-device
Dimensions: 143 * 70 * 18 mm
Weight: 8 oz / 225 g

Heres another pic of this excellent looking console in action

The kickstarter project has 11 days to go and i urge all homebrew and emulation fans and webmasters to post this on their sites and help a great project get off the ground

Open-source handheld using Linux to run classic PC and homebrew titles
A new open source gaming handheld project called GCW-Zero has joined the wealth of new technologies emerging from Kickstarter, aiming at a target of $130,000.
The device runs Linux and is focused on the homebrew and retro scenes, with the appeal's video showing the device playing versions of PC classics like Doom, Commander Keen and Descent.
"We live in a technological era where it is possible to place powerful gaming hardware that exceeds yesterday's PCs in the palm of your hand," reads the campaign page.
"Tablets and smart phones are just one example of this. Their touch screens have already revolutionized casual, portable gaming. However, many gamers would agree that they are in their true natural habitat when in direct control of that experience with physical buttons and a real d-pad or authentic analog control. The world just needed these two ideas combined into one package for the gaming community."
The Zero is ready to go into production now, with the Kickstarter funds intended to facilitate small batch manufacturing. 40 of the devices are already on their way to customers.

_wb_ has posted an entry into the DragonBox Coding Competition:
For the 2012-2013 DragonBox coding compo, I'm going to participate with an improved version of Microbes. In this thread I'll document the new stuff as I'm adding it. The version on the repo is 0.8, but the latest release before the compo was 1.0rc2, which is available here: http://boards.openpa...140#entry189906
Compared to the 0.8 repo version, the 1.0rc2 didn't have that much really new stuff, it had mainly some bugfixes and minor improvements like better level previews in the main menu.
So what will be new in the compo version?
- Highscores! (local ones, no global highscores because it's impossible to prevent cheating and I don't want to make the game need an internet connection and set up a server and all that). For each level, you can get 1 to 5 stars, depending on the difficulty setting (5 stars for insane, 1 star for easy, no stars for very easy and trivial). If you don't use the "show paths" and "build while paused" options, it's called "advanced mode" and you get golden stars. Otherwise it's called "simple mode" and you get silver stars. You only get the stars if you complete the level (duh), but even if you don't complete it, you can get a highscore based on how many epidemics (waves) you survived. The highscore also records how many lives and how much energy you have left at the end, so even if you already have the gold stars, you can still try to improve your highscore. There is a new screen (in the "Information" submenu) to view your highscores, and the silver/gold stars are also shown in the main menu (in the level previews).
- Cool down time between epidemics: Previously the epidemics (waves) would keep coming one after another, so it felt like one long wave. Now there is some time between waves, depending on the difficulty setting. In "insane" nothing changes (no break between waves), in the other difficulties there is a waiting time (the harder, the less time), and in "trivial" and "very easy", the next wave only starts when all microbes from the current wave are killed. This makes "trivial" and "very easy" much easier, so to compensate these difficulty settings are made slightly harder than before (in terms of microbe HP/damage/speed scaling factors)
- Help screens: This is still work in progress, but some improvements have already been made. The help screen used to be just a list of the enemy microbes with their stats, and a very compact representation of the units tech tree (without any info, just the icons). Now the help screen will consist of several panels: one for the microbes, one for your own units (a scrollable list, showing detailed stats), and one to explain the game controls (Christoph.Krn has offered to help me with that one).
- "Mutated" microbes: There are 3 new microbes, which are "mutated" versions of existing microbes. Besides having better stats (more hp/dmg/speed), they are also "smarter": instead of taking simply the shortest path to the destination, they take a path that tries to avoid taking damage from your units. So they might take a significant detour if that means they get no or less damage. They also avoid poisoned terrain if they can. The mutated microbes are implement, but it's currently work in progress to make some new levels in which they occur.
- Replays: This is still work in progress. The idea is that at the end of a game (whether you lose or win) you can save a recording of the game. You can then replay the recording, with fast-forward and pause. The replay files are small files, stored in appdata so you can relatively easily share them with others.
That's it for now. Of course I'm open to further suggestions and feedback. Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions so far! Most of the stuff mentioned above was based on forum suggestions, I really appreciate that!
