Evil Dragon posted this awesome image and news of the latest from the Openpandora Team:
Hi!
I haven't had time to finish the photorealistic rendering yet (and won't have to continue to work on it before Monday). However, I've rendered a sneak preview for you.
Lighting is not set up very well yet and the LEDs are still missing.
Expect more renderings next week, more close-ups, views from other sides, the stylus, etc.
Also, I just heard that some of our core devs received the WiFi antenna, so they can finish the WiFi driver. As soon as this has happened, everything is set for the mass production of the board!
We're getting closer, guys!

News from Evildragon
Some of you already saw the pictures of the final case craig posted at the boards, but here they are for those who haven't:
I also got the mesh of the case today and started to work on them in 3dsmax. Unfortunately real life work got into my way, so I couldn't finish any photorealistic renderings today, though I'm halfway through, so expect them soon.
Also, I want to take videos of cpasjustes emulators soon, let's hope I'll find some time, as I'm pretty busy with my regular work at the moment...
Michael Weston mentioned the FDM case might arrive at his place about Monday, so he can post pictures of the final Pandora case (well, still FDM, not the shiny CNC'ed case, but that will be ordered when everything fits into the FDM case).
That's it for updates for today, see you soon

News from Chip
Just to put some people who don't read every post here at ease, I figured I'd stick a quick note here.
An email with full bank transfer ordering instructions will be going out soon to everybody who preordered via CC and has not re-paid yet. It's the same info (bank details, amount, etc) that exists in a couple different threads here 1 2, but this way we know everybody is getting the info. If you are not willing or able to do a bank transfer or send a check / money order, please let us know.
Those who have been refunded and cannot reorder now will still be able to purchase a Pandora later at the exact amount they were originally refunded. I do not know when we will be able to accept credit card orders, but we'll let you know as soon as it's possible.
We will be opening up preorders again soon (after everybody who intends to pay via transfer / check / MO has had a chance to do so) for first batch cancellations. We'll be sending out emails to the first 6000 or so people who signed up for the newsletter with details. If there are still more units available, we'll send out more emails. As should be obvious, we will only be able to accept bank transfer / check / MO payments for these preorders as well.

News from Evil Dragon:
Hi there everyone,
I've seen some guys being angry about all the delays and keep asking "what's going on"... and yes, I can understand them.
If it were for us, we'd have the Pandora released already, believe me. I can't sleep well since a few weeks since these delays really make up a bad mood, and I don't think it's much different for the rest of the guys in the dev team.
So I thought I'd tell you a story... because, yes, back in September 2008, we really thought we could release the Pandora until the end of the year!
However, there was one bad thing that happened... which caused all the mess and nearly did kill everything: In the beginning of October, right after the preorders had been paid, craigs bank froze his account (as you might know).
However, not only the money from craigs preorders was on that account, but also the money from the rest of us which was meant to develop the Pandora boards, etc.
Everything had been set: We had the complete circuits (I posted videos before September), we had the nigh complete case (we did post pictures of the FDM case) and we had fixed appointments with the company in mid October to do the first mass production testing of the boards.
However, we couldn't access the money anymore for actually STARTING the mass production - that's why it didn't happen.
Also, we couldn't pay the hinge, the prototype battery, the LCDs, the prototype of the flat ribbon cable for the LCD... and without all that, we couldn't continue to work on the case.
And without any prototype boards, the devs couldn't work on the software.
It was scary. Everything we had setup so far didn't work out - simply because of a frozen account. And this was the beginning of all those delays...
It took craig about one month to unfreeze the account - and yet, not all reorderings of CC orders haven't taken place. At least, we had access to some money and could continue to develop that thing - about mid-November.
Luckily, mass production test run did go pretty fast, so by the end of November, most devs got their boards.
It didn't work so well with the LCDs though - ours had been reserved but sold elsewhere as we didn't have the money at that time. We had to wait until January to get them all (and yes, we have them, as well as all major other parts needed!).
The company that does the battery also started to work as we paid them - and right in December, they told us they couldn't fit that high capacity within the space they had planned for. So they needed to make it a bit bigger - and we needed to change the case.
That was what happened until January.
Now that it's mid-January, we're basically back on track - just a bit late.
We got the parts, the design of the case has been finished according to our deadline on January 15th, it's currently being FDMed and right after that (if everything is okay, which really should), the case will be being CNCed.
The keypad is also ready for mass production as well as the boards.
The first prototype will be used to do FCC and CE testing, so don't worry about that.
Then mass production will finally begin - yes, we know it's a few months late, but believe us: We didn't want that. Still, we're just right before the finish lane, so we won't give up.
Thank you all for your patience - and again, sorry for the delay!
Maybe now you can understand a bit more what has been happening!

Hannu Viitala has just released a new version of Frodo, the Commodore 64 emulator. Version 1.5 released today brings support for sensors (accelerometer), vibration, on-screen C-64 keyboard and a sound engine. Imagine playing Pitstop II by rotating your phone like a steering wheel, or solving Quedex maze by turning the phone in any direction. Or if you can't imagine it, just look at the video. Please note that these advanced features are not included in the free emulator, but require installing an additional "Bilbo" library, which is DonationWare and can be obtained at Hannu's homepage.

[ghostwalker] dropped in on our previous Debian Android post to let us know that he had streamlined the install process. The first time around, it quickly became difficult to complete the process because firmware updates had taken away root access. Hackers have since figured out how to downgrade from RC30 and install BusyBox. All you need to do to put Debian on your phone is download the package from [ghostwalker] and then run the installer script. This isn’t technically a port since Debian already has ARM EABI support. What would you run on your phone if you had access to the entire Debian package tree? A video of Debian starting up is embedded below.

Well, you might've read it in the main news, we were waiting for the prototype batteries to finish up the case.
Here they are, they are not wrapped up yet, but the size and type is the final one, so this is another step finished.
Also, regarding drivers, we will have something for you soon - I'm sure you'll be happy... but that will have to wait until I write the next blog entry.

January 7th, 2009, 21:08 Posted By: wraggster
Hello everyone and a very happy new year!
We wish to thank you all for your ongoing support and tell you a big sorry for all the delays we had so far.
2008 had been a very exciting year for us. With a lot of stepping stones. First we had the PayPal issue, then the banking problem with all those credit cards (and Amex is still troubling) and because of this we needed to reroute money from various other accounts to pay for the production... which caused delays, especially for the LCDs (though that issue is solved now, the last LCDs will ship soon, thank goodness).
And if that wasn't enough, we a bit trouble with the rechargeable battery, as it was pretty hard designing a battery with that high capacity that also FITS into the case. This delayed the case - but I'm happy to announce that the final battery is already being prototyped. As soon as we get it (which should be within the next week), the case design will be ready a few days later (we set the deadline for the case design to January 15th). Prototyping shouldn't take too long - and then it will only be a matter of a few weeks more until everything is ready for delivery.
So, while we're really sorry for those delays (believe me - we didn't expect THAT much problems - especially not from the banks... we couldn't have found a worse time to start this than that of a worldwide economical crisis.
However, we also got some good news for you AMEX guys: We know you didn't get your money back yet (we're having another meeting with the bank in the near future), however, we assure you that EVERYBODY WHO ORDERED AND PAID will get a Pandora, even if you didn't get the chance to reorder yet!
But, oh well, we did learn a lot - and now, after 2,5 years designing the system, the end of the trip is coming to an end. All thanks to you guys! Without your support, all this wouldn't have been possible!
Stay tuned for final prototype pics within this month!
So, here is a mini-roadmap:
* Case Design: January 15th
* Case Prototyping: approx. 1-2 weeks later
* Final production and delivery: approx. 2 - 4 weeks later
2009 will surely be the year of the Pandora.

Fortinet today announced that a new version of their freeware FortiCleanUp tool has been released, making it possible to recover the phone after receiving the "Curse SMS". So in (unlikely) case you ever receive such an SMS and it blocks the messaging function of your device, don't spend money on any commercial "anti-virus" program, just use this free tool instead.

Pandora's production just needs the last steps. There was another delay because the battery manufacturer refined the design an so we had to delay the prototype case, too(it doesn't make any sense, when the battery doesn't fit). At the moment a prototype of the final battery is being made and will be finished in the next days - shortly after that the final case will be adapted to the new battery. And then we REALLY will have the final prototype case - because we will have everything what is needed.
A delivery of Pandora in the next two months is very likely.

Did you accidentally flip the switch on that OTA update to RC30 on your G1 and currently find yourself stuck with a non-root lifestyle? Well thanks to forum member chavonbravo over at xda-developers, things are about to get awesome for you. You can now revert back to RC29 with ease by snagging the uploaded image, renaming, copying to your microSD card, and running through standard procedure for re-flashing the phone. We can attest that the hack does indeed work, so feel free to proceed. Word to the wise, though: getting up to a modded RC30 isn't as easy as some might have you believe, so set aside a little time to walk through the steps (check out ModMyGPhone's guide page for clear instructions).
