While the mould for the keymat is currently being produced, we're concentrating on working more on the keyboard layout.
We mostly scrapped out old layout since we had too many important keys missing - so there are no Umlauts or language specific keys on the layout, it's a plain English keyboard with a compose key to do special characters.
That layout is not final yet, it's our current WIP.
It might look weird and mixed up at first sight, but there's one major difference with a standard PC Keyboard: You only use two thumbs for typing on that one, so it's much more important that the most used characters are convenient to reach (which can be a problem when using the Fn Button).

Sony Ericsson has just unveiled a concept Symbian Foundation platform based phone called Idou. It's actually more than just a concept as it is said to become a real device, but at the moment it is in a very early stage so many things may change until then. Detailed information/specifications and release date will be announced later this year but the device is supposed to become available in the second half of 2009.
Idou is a part of The Entertainment Unlimited consumer proposition announced today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Bringing together rich content, unique applications and best in class entertainment experiences, the new consumer proposition is based around three key promises:
* Uniting best in class entertainment experiences into one offering such as the Walkman music experience, the Cyber-shot imaging experience, Java gaming and messaging integrated with services and applications.
* Broadening entertainment experiences by seamlessly integrating the mobile phone into other devices in the home letting consumers share and enjoy top quality entertainment content through a variety of channels including TV, PC and Hifi systems.
* Fusing communication with entertainment by removing barriers and offering unlimited sharing opportunities, multiplying the value of people's entertainment experiences through a host of innovative web applications and Sony Ericsson's Play Now offering.
Capture moments, talk through pictures and share all your experiences like never before with the 12.1 megapixel camera, intuitive touch features and Xenon flash. Tap directly into your favourite videos and tracks with the full-touch media menu and feast your eyes on movies, TV-series and video clips in true 16:9 widescreen format (3.5" display). Based on what will become the Symbian Foundation operating system, thousands of applications are available online letting you install new applications and download exciting content from PlayNow to make the Idou truly yours.
The demo unit showcased in Barcelona was equipped with a very "introductory" development build of the OS so it's hard to speculate now how the final version will look like. Based on the first release of the Symbian Foundation platform, it will be a successor to the current S60 5th Edition. As a "Symbian Foundation Certified" device, it will be cross-compatible with all other Symbian Foundation based devices of other brands (e.g. Nokia or Samsung) and hopefully also with existing 3rd software that now works fine e.g. on the Nokia 5800. The UI of the Idou will follow Sony Ericsson's UI design, including e.g. the Media Bar, Walkman Player, icons and menu style known from other Sony Ericsson phones.

So this thing's definitely got some heft to it -- and honestly, especially for a business-centric device in this class, we don't think that's a bad thing. As with just about everything HTC churns out, the Touch Pro2 is exquisitely manufactured, feels rock-solid, and the WVGA is absolutely awesome -- we noticed that the gestures and animations are totally smooth and responsive, proving that WinMo is perfectly capable of handling this kind of UI dazzle.
The Straight Talk functionality for seamlessly moving between different types of communication will be appreciated by anyone who spends half their business day on the phone and seems to work (and look) positively lovely -- and as for that speakerphone? We can totally picture ourselves slamming this thing upside down during a meeting in a fit of "our company just lost a $100M contract"-style rage with a satisfying, weighty "thud" and instantly bringing the whole room into the conversation. Follow the break for a couple videos of this thing in action (and sorry, no angry speakerphone fits).

It's hard to imagine anyone being able to bully Google into submission, but according to Venture Beat, that's exactly what Apple did. The report claims Apple encouraged Google not to use multi-touch technology in the Android-based G1 mobile phone, and Google agreed, Venture Beat says citing an un-named Android team member as the source

News from evil dragon:
Hi!
While we're still discussing about the final keyboard layout and font (it's not as easy as you would think), devs are continuing working on the OS.
At the moment, we think that a generic english keyboard layout would be the best, but regional ones can additionally bought for a few bucks. This is not final yet, but it tends to that direction.
Well, back to the OS.
DJWillis got 3G (UMTS) USB-sticks working in his latest image! He's still tweaking a bit, but there should be a video there, soon. Yep, it means you can go outside and surf anywhere with your Pandora if you got a mobile phone surfing flatrate and a compatible stick.
He also included locales support, so upon release you should have a localized version of the OS on your Pandora.
Meanwhile, cpasjuste started coding a nice menu to run apps in minimal mode (as it would've been too complicated to finish gmenu until the release). The menu already supports PXML Format (which has changed a bit, but we'll release the new specs of it soon).
I'll take a video of it once it is running fine, which should be about next week.
I'll also start coding an app which helps every dev creating PXML files by simply filling in all the required and optional field and click on "Create it!".
And last, but not least, cpasjuste released a small Pandora Toolchain installer which automagically downloads needed files and libraries and installs a toolchain on Linux system, which can be used to compile for the Pandora.
This is not the final and official one yet, however, if somebody wants to see if some of his projects compile or want me to test their programs on a real Pandora, here's his (or her) chance

When the Andriod G1 came out many were dissapointed from the lack of multi-touch support. The iPhone remains the multi-touch king so to speak in the mobile phone business. Many have speculated over the reasoning behind Andriod's lack of multi-touch support while others have added it in themselves later. Finally a Venturebeat source on Google's Andriod team has come clean.
Google has not included multi-touch support in their Andriod platform because Apple asked them not to.
Apple and Google have a good relationship together. Apple has google as the default search engine in the iPhone...

Evildragon has posted a new pic of the Pandora console, heres the details:
Yeah, I know you gotta be fed up with renderings already... however, this one might be interesting for you
This time, you can see the Pandora including the stylus.
The keyboard layout is nearly finished, we're still discussing about some keys and the font, however, I don't think much will change.
Fn+[1 - 0] are the F-Keys, SELECT will be used for CTRL.

While Telstra's busy bragging about Android sets from HTC that don't yet exist, Australian rival Optus is making stuff happen. How? Easy: T-Mobile's G1 is being repurposed as the HTC Dream down here -- one of the phone's rumored names prior to its original release, you might recall -- featuring 2100MHz HSDPA, WiFi, and everything else you've come to know and love / hate about the world's first retail Android device. It'll launch February 16 on plans starting at $59 Australian (about $38) per month, so it'll be pretty accessible. Sure, Telstra, you may have some awesome devices in the pipeline, but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, if you know what we're saying.

News from Evil Dragon:
Yup, I found a bit of time... not that much, so there's not that much to see on this picture.
Basically, it shows the back of the Pandora with all the ports (which we haven't finished designing in that render).
From left to right:
Mini USB, EXT Port (where TV Out, etc. will be connected), USB 2.0 and DC in.
Of course, in the finished version those ports will have their names or symbols printed below.

News from Evil dragon:
Hi!
I know you're all waiting for news... well, here are some tiny tidbits, but nothing major YET. And there won't be as much stuff to post as I did last week, since we're now all waiting for the CNC case.
Well, and that brings us to on topic:
The CNC case has been ordered and while we don't know yet how long it'll take, it should hopefully be finished within the next two weeks.
During that time, we won't have much to show you - well, except for some more polished videos of the prototype case you've seen already since Michael will probably send it to me.
Also, I'll show you some emulators on it, running directly from Matchbox!
I'll also try to do more renderings from various views as well.
Stay tuned!

CraigIx posted this news and a new video on the Pandora Blog:
Hello everyone, Craig here,
Whoops, I forgot to post this here, but it's a video of the Pandora running a real desktop.
We have maxed things up a bit by playing an MP3, loading up firefox and the GIMP at the same time.
It deals with it pretty well considering we have no hardware acceleration yet.

We've already seen some Samsung rumors start to crop up in advance of Mobile World Congress, and it looks like the flood gates have now fully opened up, with a slew of new leaks and rumors of varying veracity now making their way across the internet. The most solid of those is the 16GB Samsung Omnia pictured above, which otherwise isn't too radically different from its current 8GB incarnation. That includes quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and single-band UMTS/HSDPA connectivity, along with the usual 3.2-inch WQVGA touchscreen, a five megapixel camera with built-in flash, a secondary QCIF front camera, and the trifecta of built-in Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS.
In other pre-MWC news, the Dutch site GSM Helpdesk has reportedly confirmed that Samsung will indeed be introducing both a 12 megapixel and an 8 megapixel handset, the latter of which will supposedly be a successor to the Innov8 and run the Symbian S60 OS, while the 12 megapixel phone will apparently run Samsung's own OS. Lastly, but certainly not least, GSM Helpdesk is also reporting that Samsung will be announcing its very first Android phone within the next two weeks, which just so happens to line up nicely with MWC, although it unsurprisingly doesn't have any more details than that.

As you will have seen in the last couple of days we are nearing the end of the beginning, the videos are out there with more to come.
So in order to get things moving along to mass production we have to put an end date on reorders and also allow people to take up the empty order places.
Please try to get your REorders in within the next 7 days, don't worry if they don't arrive for a little after that - we will be flexible.
New orders, if you want to order a Pandora (or two) from the first batch you can now place a new order via:
Bank Transfer (tranzfers, xoom, via your bank)
Money Order (free from your bank but you will have to post us it)
Cheque/Check
The price of a Pandora is $330, please email us to arrange (we need to calculate your shipping method).
openpandorasales@gmail.com or call +44 191 243 2253
You can also contact Evildragon in Germany if that is more convenient / closer for you, or Fatih in Turkey if you are in the Middle east. (I'll update this part when I confirm the right email addresses).
We are trying very hard to get s US$ account set up - we might have the details this week for this. I hope this will help more people to order. We can talk about this if you email or phone us.
You cannot use a credit card.
New orders will be taken for about another two to three weeks (or of course until we run out of places, whichever happens first). During that time we will be moving forward to production.
I'll update this post with any changes or question answers.
Go on, tell me what I've forgotten to mention.

Evildragon has posted a pic of the Pandora which is now nearing total completion to be shipped in a matter of weeks, heres the pic:
Hiya!
Didn't find as much time as I hoped I'd find to continue the model and renderings of the Pandora, but here is another small sneak peak
I guess you will like it, as it solves the mystery about the LEDs.
[IMG] [/IMG]
Also, the FDM case did arrive at Michael Weston's home and he has successfully assembled a Pandora using the LCD, the board, the prototype battery and the prototype keymat. EVERYTHING FITS!
I hope he finds some time to make some nice pictures soon!

The man behind the Pandora did a talk at Newcastle University:
Craig Rothwell — “Building a computer was easier in the 80’s”
The final presentation was given by Craig Rothwell from the OpenPandora project. The Pandora is designed to be a handheld game console with high-end PDA capabilities, but may also be run as a low-powered full-featured Linux desktop. The unit uses a 1GHz Texas Instruments processor, 256Mb of RAM and a battery which should last 10 hours.
The units are manufactured in the US as they have had problems finding a UK based company to work with. With over 4,000 pre-orders the unit this seems rather short sighted by UK industry.
Craig was supposed to bring a demo unit with him to the talk but the courier couldn’t get it to him in time. He expects to bring one next month and hinted that we may see them in the shops soon with a price point of around £200.

More from Evil Dragon:
Well... sort of
Why? Because yesterday has been the chinese new years day - which means that most of the guys in China are on holidays at the moment.
This might mean a delay of a few days for our CNC case and the keymat, though we're not sure about that yet (we're still talking to the companies about that.)
Some good news: We managed to get WiFi working! Basically, that was the last thing to test on the MK3 board, so the actual board is now ready for the mass production!
Going to bed now, it's 5am here in Germany, worked enough for today, eh?
