News from Evildragon:
It already has more content than the old one - and we really do hope you like it!
As we're nearing release, we thought we could revamp it a bit - it should make it easier for newcomers to find out what the Pandora is.
We also added status page, which had been a request for months by a lot of people.
There will be more content added during the next weeks, new pictures, articles, infos, etc.
Just stay tuned, there's still a lot of work to be done here.
Now, you're also waiting for some official development news, right?
Well, as you've seen on the last blog post, the prototype TV Out cables and the first mass produced boards have arrived at Michaels place. And guess what: We haven't encountered any problems so far with those! So the boards and the cables have already become a reality. Yay!
Now the only thing we need to wait for are the cases. The mould is still in production - the Pandora apparently is more complex than the company at first thought. They try to finish it before the Chinese Autumn Holidays (which are in October), let's all hope they manage to do this. We'll keep you informed. We're also still trying to get WIP pictures from the mould creation. Would certainly look interesting!
Recently, I've seen a quite a few threads on the boards which were about "how long are you still gonna wait" or other disappointments about the long delays or the currently quiet time without any updates...
Well, I know it's hard - but there's not much we can update at the moment. Everything is finished except for the case mould, and all we can do is wait until the company finishes it. Once they finish it, it's just a matter of days until we have the first REAL final Pandoras in our hands - and then the real fun begins: Mass production. And no, I don't think it will be two months (tm) until the mass production starts... it could start a few days after we have the first real Pandora... and that should be the case within the next weeks!
And as some guy asked at the boards how we handle the situation... well, I can only speak for myself, but I have really mixed feelings.
On the one hand, I'm happy that we have a community like you, following our progress and waiting sooooo patiently. On the other hand, I feel bad because we had so many delays and have your money... then again, I see that the only tiny thing missing is the case, which should also be finished soon, which makes me happy, as it means there's a light at the end of the tunnel!
For me, it's a real rollercoaster ride. And while I'm eagerly awaiting putting this project behind me, I think I'll also miss something when we delivered it. Really weird feelings.
I hope that does answer your questions
See you soon!

News/release from Cpasjuste
Hi !
I'm working for some time now on a 2D library for the pandora, which is now cross platform so we can build and run code on an i386 linux with an openGL based card.
I'm actually releasing the first official release, only the i386 binary for now, so people can try it, report back problem's and begin some cool games
You'll have to run linux and compile SDL 1.3 to use it ( svn checkout http://svn.libsdl.org/trunk/SDL ).
The header files are not really commented for now, but you can take a look at the exemples in the archive, i think they are pretty easy to understand.

Unlike Opera Mobile, Opera Mini crunches pages on a server for viewing on your Java phone or BlackBerry. The beta has a snappier interface geared for touch or keypad control, and adds tabbed browsing, speed dial, and a password manager.
The idea is to mirror the desktop version as much as possible. Open a new tab and you'll see the visual speed dial thumbnails, which you can also customize based on your browsing history. The new version can also be set to store login details on your phone.
As with Opera 4.2, YouTube videos will play via your phone's native media player, and there's still no Flash support. What also sucks: This beta won't support Skins and Opera Link, though both should be reintroduced as development continues.

Samsung's mobile Application Store has gone live with a mixture of games and apps, including a smattering of big-name games.
Guitar Hero: World Tour and Space Invaders are two of the most high-profile games available at launch, retailing for £3.50 and £3 in the UK respectively.
That implies prices will be pegged low on the store from launch. Com2uS' Super Action Hero, Gameloft's Bubble Bash and Astraware Solitaire are among the other featured games for the store's launch.
However, elsewhere there are some big names lacking. The most well-known app in the Social Networking category is ShoZu, for example - no Facebook or MySpace for launch. Meanwhile, mobile browser Skyfire is the biggest name in the featured Entertainment apps list.
However, the number of available apps can be expected to increase quickly: earlier this month, Handmark announced that it would be aggregating Windows Mobile and Symbian apps for the store.

Palm might have tried to bottle up that webOS 1.2 leak the other day, but it looks like it was to no avail -- videos of the new build in action have hit YouTube, and the hacking community has already ripped the code apart and found some new features. Just like we'd heard, the browser's been updated and there's revised and improved copy / paste functionality, but the big new feature seems to be email searching, which Pre owners have longed for since day one. Hidden deeper, it seems like the LEDs in the gesture area can be enabled for notifications by tweaking just a few lines of code, and there's also the somewhat disconcerting addition of remote app kill switch for Palm, which would apparently let it delete apps anytime it wants. We're sure this is just a cover-your-ass move as Palm prepares to open up the App Catalog -- and it's not exactly unprecedented -- but it's still a little disconcerting given how closely Palm seems to be monitoring Pre usage to begin with. Oh, but come on, let's turn that frown upside-down -- video of new features after the break.

The ScummVM Team have released a new version of ScummVM for just about every system ever, firstly heres some info about scummVM:
ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!
Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more. You can find a thorough list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often.
Now heres a screenshot or two:
Heres todays release news:
Did you hear about our plans for 1.0.0? This is going to be the best ScummVM release ever! And to make it even more remarkable, we decided to put out a Release Candidate, which is awaiting you here.
It is the usual stable and supported release so don't let the name of 'Release Candidate' or 'RC1' throw you off, however we encourage you to test thoroughly. We have a release testing wiki page, which we would like to see turn into a mass of green indicating successful removal of any issues in the titles supported, and thus we need your help, our dear users of ScummVM. It would be really great to test as many games as possible on all variety platforms our project is ported to.

We know you just can't wait to get typing on the Pre's lush touchscreen, and the folks at WebOS Internals must feel the same way as they've been hard at work making their on-screen keyboard a functional reality. Installation has been made a breeze thanks to the Preware app, and usability seems to have improved markedly since the pre-alpha version, but a few kinks remain that need to be ironed out. Still, if you're willing to put up with some buggy behavior and the potential for your Pre to melt into a puddle of fiery lava, then slide past the break to get educated on the how, what and where to download.

With the latest installment of Bell's "Meet my Palm Pre" series, paid spokesman Bradley here has basically guaranteed himself that he'll be visited by elderly American roller girls with bad attitudes and a taste for justice. Some of the gruesome highlights:
"Unlike our neighbors to the south, Canadians are an active people."
"Coupe de Kill is kinda scary. I should probably get out of here before she goes on Twitter."
"According to Wikipedia, this game was first played in 1299. And, uh, I think some of these people were maybe there."
Follow the break for the video.

CEO Marcus Johansson explains why his firm isn't ditching Java for smartphones just yet.
The last year has seen hundreds of independent mobile games developers - not to mention some mid-tier publishers - abandoning Java in favour of iPhone. It's a veritable brain drain.
GlobalFun isn't one of them. The company continues to sell J2ME titles around the world, and earlier this week signed an exclusive deal to develop and distribute Java games in EMEA based on Turner Broadcasting's brands.
"GlobalFun sees the J2ME market as being important moving forward," CEO Marcus Johansson tells ME.
"From a volume perspective there are still a lot of new handsets being produced and shipped where J2ME is the main platform for games. We believe that there is a great deal of business to be made on the J2ME platform for several years to come."
The Turner deal is pretty big for GlobalFun, although it's been working with the broadcaster for several years on a non-exclusive basis, making games based on Cartoon Network brands.
"Signing this three year agreement takes the relationship to the next level," says Johansson. "It gives us the possibility do define and execute more long-term road maps and to work even closer together with Turner to create joint marketing activities."
The deal includes a non-exclusive option for non-J2ME mobile platforms - presumably iPhone, Android, Symbian and so on. How will this work - will GlobalFun have first dibs on porting the Java games to those platforms?
"Over the contract range of three years it is important for GlobalFun to have the possibility of addressing the platforms that drives sales," says Johansson. "We will work in close co-operation with Turner to evaluate what properties and platforms to work with."
It seems it's too early to say. However, GlobalFun IS looking to iPhone with its own stable of games, although Johansson admits the competition on the App Store is ferocious.
"GlobalFun is carefully selecting the titles to take to the iPhone and our first games are about to start launching shortly," he says, while pointing out that the publisher is also supporting BlackBerry.
"Android has from my point of view a great chance of becoming one of the most important platforms a bit further down the line," says Johansson. "GlobalFun is looking at the right timing to enter this platform."
The company is also ramping up its activities in Europe and North America, to complement its existing strength in Latin America.

When we asked how you'd change Palm's Pre, one group of respondents requested a virtual keyboard, a group that should really quit its bellyaching because the phone already has one... it just doesn't offer any particularly useful keys. That's changing thanks to the modders at WebOS Internals, who are taking the control that pops up when you hit the "sym" key and expanding it to actually contain some symbols you might use more than once a week -- like, you know, letters and jazz. They have a functional keyboard operational at this point that works in both phone orientations, but it's still decidedly pre alpha, meaning only those whose delicate thumbs are blistering on the Pre's soft, smooth, physical keys should even think about this modification right now. The team has made huge strides in just the past few days, though, so perhaps before the end of the month everyone can be soft-typing pain-free.

Yes, we did.
You've seen some requested videos during the last days, now it's time for some more facts and information, eh?
Well, the review of the complete case and the keymat is finished. There were a few small issues that we already corrected and on Monday the company did tell us "Everything is ready, we can start when you are ready".
And guess what - we were ready! Finally all issues of the case and keymat have been resolved and they are now working on the mould.
DJWillis has also made some progress with WiFi. Basically, he can communicate with the Module, only calibration doesn't work yet. As soon as he gets this to work, WiFi will work completely - including WPA, etc.
Regarding software, we were discussing about using cpasjuste's GUI as minimal launcher, since it is so much nicer than matchbox and it's just a program you run, not a complete WindowManager.
So we're currently thinking about using E17 as fully fledged desktop and cpasjuste's GUI as minimal mode for the gamers who don't want to use a complete desktop.
That way we don't need two window manager and starting the minimal GUI is easy - just use it as autostart program.
I know there are still plenty of things to do - and the worst thing is that there won't be many pictures while waiting for all companies to finish... but we're still getting there, step by step.

It's been a hot minute since we first laid eyes on those WinMo screen grabs featuring big ol' buttons at the bottom of the display -- signaling, we hoped, an all-around effort to minimize stylus use in the mobile OS -- and now we have a video for you that seems to further make the case. While WinMo 6.5 build 23022 is still pretty clumsy, those finger-friendly (well, at least, "finger-friendlier," or maybe "not as finger-hostile") buttons grace the bottom of the display, and there is an iPhone-esque magnifying glass option for zooming in on and editing text. Technical details for this build are available at the read link -- but first, make sure you peep the thing in action at the break.

Along with the release of new version 6.2 of QuickOffice, a free upgrade to version 6 has been provided to users of all Nokia S60 smartphones. The range of the upgrade depends on the version that shipped preinstalled on the phone, which means that Eseries phones users get an upgrade with full viewing and editing capabilities whereas other phones owners get the "viewer" version only. Upgrade will be made available through QuickOffice's own Quickmanager, available under Options/Upgrades in the application menu. If you happen to have the viewing only version and you would like to have full editing functionality, you'll need to buy the full version and then you'll be eligible for the full viewing/editing upgrade.

While Palm is busily engaged in a game of domination with Apple to see which one can keep iTunes sync working or broken the longest, the Pre homebrew community hasn't been sitting idle, introducing two new and painless ways to get homemade software up in your handset. The first is a desktop app called WebOS Quick Install that works on Mac, PC, and Linux, allowing installation with just a drag, a drop, and a click. The other is called fileCoaster, enabling users to download and install IPKs right on the phone itself, plus other files too. Two great apps for fans of unofficial softwares and good tidings for a warm future of basement innovation -- only a month after the first custom apps came to light.

Hiya folks!
It's been a bit calm around here in the blog, right?
Well, that's for one good reason: Everything is going smoothly right now.
The first check of the case data is finished, the company started creating the moulds. As soon as the first rough mould is finished (which will surely take a while, the case is a pretty complicated mesh), they are gonna do a first rough case and check that everything fits (with a final board, so that nothing can go wrong here!)
In the meantime, the PCBs are still in production. It will take them a few days longer, as they optimized the machines a bit more in the beginning. This does mean, that the boards will probably ship 10 days later (beginning of August). But it does also mean, that the build quality will be better and the failure rate is way lower. No time lost, as the case company won't need the board before August. And if the failure rate is lower in the beginning, mass production itself will be faster. So when the cases are ready, we can go full speed ahead!
So everything is going pretty well at the moment. Seems like Murphy is on holidays - which is something, we're really glad of
Of course, we used the waiting time for other stuff.
The first prototype of the TV Out cable is working, we are now designing that thing and optimizing it (i.e. put IN and OUT on the connectors, decide for the colors, etc.)
Another thing we're working at is CE / FCC. You might have seen the discussion on the gp32x.com boards. One guy said, that you need a final PROTOTYPE for FCC. The company I did ask said, the final UNIT is needed. I'm going to find out, if a prototype is enough - as that would mean, we can do FCC and CE at the same time and do have all the needed certificates when the Pandora is ready for shipping!
That should speed up everything
Michael also did some quick checks already, the Pandora doesn't do any bad things, radiation seems to be within the allowed areas. It's just a rough test, but if there was something really wrong, we could certainly find it out that way.
The only really critical part for radiation might be the WiFi antenna. But that is something that can be fixed within a few days, so we're positive CE / FCC will go smoothly.
That's it for todays posting. I'll make sure to keep you informed!
