2011 was a good start for the Pandora.
A very good one. Finally.
It looks like the nub issues are finally resolved, and since then, production has been started and never stopped.
Nearly 500 more units have been shipped already (some more will follow during the next days), the next 250 PCBs have been shipped from CC to Craig two days ago, and Craig is already busy preparing the next 500 cases... while I am soldering LCD cables for the next 1200 units.
The official boards are bustling with activity (over 500 posts in one day!) and we got a lot of "Thanks for that cool device! I got it - and it was well worth the wait"-messages.
Thanks! It took us a long time, but it seems most issues are resolved and things are moving!
And the Pandora goes worldwide - looks like the first units have hit Japan and one of the preordered units got a review... okay, I can't read anything, but it has some nice pictures!
We're now actively working on getting Batch 2 organized, paid quite a few part bills, check the part orders, etc., while CC continues to produce boards... and we continue to assemble and ship units.
A stable 1000 units per month rate would really please us in the future, would be a nice continuation after all preorders have been shipped.
I also got the first samples of the new LCD cables and they look way more sturdy - and thanks to a layout change from Michael, soldering the speakers on can be done in a third of the time.
Looks like this will probably also mean the end of the purple haze. While it has been become rare, it still happens sometimes. And we want to eliminate that SOMETIMES as well!
The first batch of boards with broken nubs is leaving for Texas soon - so if you got one of the first units and one of your nubs is broken, it could be a good time contacting your distributor and ask when and how to handle the replacement.
Okay, that's it for now, I need to get back to solder more LCD cables!
Those who received their unit already: Enjoy it

George "Geohot" Hotz broke open iPhone and broke open PlayStation 3. Apple wasn't happy and Sony has taken Hotz to court.
What would Microsoft do if Hotz broke open Windows Phone 7?
Nothing.
In fact, Microsoft wants to send Hotz a Windows Phone 7 handset so he can get cracking.
"Geohot, if you want to build cool stuff on WP7, send me email and the team will give you a phone - let dev creativity flourish," tweeted Brandon Watson, Windows Phone 7 team lead.
Hotz's jailbreak for PS3 allows homebrew applications and pirated games to run on the console. Sony's trying to stop him distributing it, but Hotz is fighting The Man every step of the way.

Well, yes, you read right: The nubs have been finished a week earlier than planned... and that means: CircuitCo now has ALL THE NUBS needed to finish Batch 1!
Let's hope they continue to produce in lightspeed as they started two weeks ago.
Some good news for everyone who ordered from me (GP2X Shop):
The first ones (about 40) of the new units should arrive tomorrow, the next ones have already been shipped today.
So expect some shipping emails within the next days
As some people asked, I setup a donation account. You can find the relevant info on the official page.
This is no "Hey, we want mooooore of your money!" - it has been setup as quite a few people asked me how and if they can donate to the project.
And no worries, we will force no one to donate
Well, that's it for the news. We're waiting for more updates from CircuitCo and schedules now that they have all the nubs.
You can be sure we'll inform you as soon as we have more information

The official PlayStation app for iOS and Android mobile devices is now available for download free of charge, Sony has confirmed.
As reported last month, version 1.0 lets you check your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends' games and online status. You'll also get PlayStation and PSP news as it happens, and can log on to the PlayStation Blog.
It's compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch devices sporting OS 4 and above, and most Android handsets with a minimum of OS 1.6.
For now, it's only available in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands, but Sony hopes to roll it out to "most of SCEE's markets" with the next update, which is due "soon".

So, here's an interesting tale. That render that Ocosmos teased us with at the front-end of this week? The version with the slide-out QWERTY keyboard has been nixed, so those hoping and praying for a release date on that one can keep right on dreaming. But the other units are mighty real, and the company swears up and down it's on track to ship 'em both, despite not having a functioning unit here at CES. The OCS1U will be based on Intel's Oak Trail platform (1.5GHz), and if all goes well, it'll ship in the first half of this year. The device be based around Windows 7, and will be "priced competitively" compared to the iPad -- so, in other words, around $500 or so.
Other specifications will include 802.11b/g/n WiFi, optional 3G, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, a 5-inch capacitive touch panel (1024 x 600), a 32GB / 64GB SSD, microSD card slot, HDMI / USB ports, an inbuilt accelerometer and front (1.3 megapixel) / rear (3 megapixel) cameras. Furthermore, both of the joystick pads -- which flank the screen on the left and right -- will be totally customizable, so they can do one thing while in a game and another while handling Office duties. The OCS1E is a screen-only affair, with the same internal configuration. In order to add joysticks to this one, you'll need either a magnetic dock or a folio case, both of which have Bluetooth joystick pads embedded. This guy's expected to ship at the end of this year or in early 2012, but it's obviously too early to estimate pricing. Take a closer look in the gallery below and the video just past the break.

News via http://boards.openpandora.org/index....es-2011-01-04/
Well, first off: A happy new year to all of you!
I hope you had some nice, relaxing holidays.
I was personally slowing down a bit, first off, I catched myself a flu which MADE me slow down a bit, and second, I was pretty much worn out (I guess that also was the reason for the flu... cold weather and too much work doesn't go well together).
Craig also had some chest infection and had to take antibiotics (ouch), but now we both recovered and are now back to work.
The first 350 Pandora PCBs have arrived on December 29th and most of them are already assembled and now being tested and flashed.
We want to do thorough testing with these first units with new nubs, so it takes a bit longer.
Meanwhile, CC in Texas was also busy and managed to finish another 400 boards even though there were holidays. I don't know whether they are shipped already or not yet, but seeing progress there is nice.
400 more LCD cables are on the way to me, waiting to get speakers soldered. With those, the next 1000 units can be built
Nubs production is also going on. We don't have any exact numbers but hopefully the next 2000 will be ready before CC runs out of them.
A lot of people have asked about the daily videos:
Well, they take A LOT of time. For some videos, I needed about 4 hours per day - and doing this besides my normal work is eating up my time.
I also said from the very beginning that those videos will be continued until the deliveries start again - which should be within the next days.
Ther WILL be more videos, no worries, but no daily videos anymore. I'll rather use the time I've left to continue to work on the OS. There are still a lot of tweaks and fixes to be done, and now that more users will get Pandoras, a more polished OS is more important in my opinion.
Finally, things are moving again. Let's have a good new year

News via http://wejp.k.vu/gmu/gmu-0-7-2_released
Here is another Gmu release with several new features and bugfixes. Once again Gmu is available for several platforms: GP2X, GP2X Wiz, Dingoo A320/A330, Ben Nanonote, Pandora Handheld and for the first time the Zipit Z2. Caanoo users please have a look here.
The Zipit is kind of special in that there is no operating system everyone uses, so it isn't really possible to create a package that everyone can use. I have included Gmu in my little Linux system for the Z2, though. Also I am including a Z2 package here which should work for those root filesystems which are based on uClibc.
Changes since the last release:
» Speex decoder plugin for playing .spx files
» Autoscroll feature: Gmu can automatically scroll the playlist view to the currently played track
» Command line tool for controling Gmu (can also work over the network)
» Pandora: Gmu window can be closed by clicking the close button
» Pandora: Fullscreen option added (press F to toggle fullscreen)
» Support for the Zipit Z2 platform
» Bugfix: Time display was only partly visible when playtime/length was above 99:99
» Bugfix: The display backlight power-off timer was not being disabled when switching to another virtual terminal (Ben Nanonote/Zipit Z2)
» Simplified process of adding new platforms/devices
» Some other changes and bugfixes I forgot to mention
Pandora users: It seems on some Pandoras Gmu does not remember its settings, which is not a bug in Gmu but a bug with the PND system. In such cases Gmu simply cannot store its configuration. If you are in doubt, please check if there are Gmu's config files on your SD card under /pandora/appdata/gmu-7. In those cases where storing the settings did not work, sometimes there were subdirectories with strange names (with several dots or commas in it name) in that /pandora/appdata/gmu-7 directory. You might also want to try to remove the gmu-7 directory and then start Gmu.
Ben NanoNote users: To be able to use some new features and key mappings you need to remove your user config directory before running Gmu. Simply delete /root/.config/gmu/
GP2X users: This release works with the Open2X firmware only. When you are still using the old GPH firmware, please use Gmu 0.6.3 instead

PCSX-ReARMed is yet another PCSX fork, based on PCSX-Reloaded. It has no relation to psx4all/psx4pandora or pcsx4all (other than being PCSX derived), is (almost) drama free* and has the source available now. The main feature it has is Ari64's dynarec, modified to suit PCSX. There is a bit of NEON for color space conversion too. The compatibility should be close to the PC version.
Performance is close to psx4all and heavily depends on game in question, as it uses P.E.Op.S. GPU and SPU code (slower than psx4all), but uses much superior Ari64's dynarec. The frontend should also be much more pleasant to use than psx4all one though. It uses HLE emulation and does not need BIOS (does not even support it yet but will do in future for compatibility reasons).
download:
http://notaz.gp2x.de/releases/pcsxr/pcsx_rearmed_r1.pnd
source (GIT):
git://notaz.gp2x.de/~notaz/pcsx_rearmed.git
* even though I have no physical or legal means to enforce it, I'd like to state that Zodttd is not welcome to use any of my code from this project (including Ari64's dynarec modifications) due to personal reasons.
Backstory
I was rather unhappy with the state of PSX (PSOne if you like) emulation on pandora and wanted to play some games, so I've started planning on doing psx emulator around 2 months ago. First I thought about doing ARM oriented emulator from scratch; I used to play some games back in the day and am quite interested in the hardware. However after thinking about it a bit it became obvious that I don't have enough time to finish such project in reasonable amount of time, and doing a recompiler that could reach or surpass Ari64's level would need a lot of effort that could be considered wasted as we already have such a thing (although it's under rather restrictive GPL license).
So I decided to go for combining Ari64's recompiler with PCSX and ended up with this build of PCSX-ReARMed that you can try now. Something like 95% of the time was spent on integrating the recompiler and fixing various related issues that arose from this work. No matter how good it is for recompiling, it's *very* difficult and frustrating to work with due to code quality issues. Code duplication (usually 3-4 times), most variables given 1 to 3 letter long names, globals all over the place, magic constants and some hardcoded N64 logic made it a really tough job (no offense Ari64, I'm really pleased on how it works now, at least until new major bug pops up B) ).
Right now I'm looking forward to squeezing some more performance from GPU and SPU code, then maybe doing some NEON on GTE (doing it's flags with NEON might be an issue). We'll see how this turns out, meanwhile I hope you enjoy this release

Spark PS, the PlayStation Network counterpart of Spark has been released, and is available on Android Market.
The app is considerably faster than its browser-based counterpart, and includes features that even the browser-based version does not currently have – such as the date the trophies were unlocked in trophy comparison mode. It also include some of the more indirectly useful features of Spark 360 (as they’re both based on the same engine): multiple account support, image caching, and background processing.

News via http://boards.openpandora.org/index....rd-2010-12-17/
We got an update - and it sounds good!
It really seems for me there was work to do for other customers when our nubs arrived, which is the reason it took a while before Pandora production has been setup to properly resume.
250 boards are ready to ship on Tuesday. CircuitCo offered to ship them to us at their cost, which is pretty cool, thanks
750 boards are currently being tested and nub-installed.
While this sure it too late for some christmas Pandoras, it seems that (depending on the weather and deliveries), early January could spit out more Pandoras into the world, which is something to look forward.
A nice contact from TI is also helping us to deal with any issues.
These are some nice news before moving into the weekend.
I've also mostly recovered now, so the videos should continue on Monday.

News via http://boards.openpandora.org/index....sh-2010-12-15/
I just closed the other thread, as a lot of bashing has been going on there.
Please, do NOT bash against CircuitCo here. If you want to discuss about any issue, please do so in an appropriate manner.
After all, CC did the following:
They DID produce 900 perfectly working boards so far. None of the boards sent to our customers failed.
They DID help us setting up the production!
Yes, they told us 2000 boards are ready and Trey only found about 500 half-finished ones.
However, they WERE working on the boards when he visited!
As mentioned, I can PERFECTLY understand if they didn't do anything because they have been waiting for the nubs.
Yes, I also don't like that we have been told they were working on the boards - but maybe they had a reason for telling us so?
They know we are not experienced in that business, so they might've told us because they feared we would panic otherwise.
Before getting angry at anyone, let's wait how the production continues.
I am still waiting for an official updated schedule for the next 1000 boards and I will let you know as soon as I get it.
As I said multiple times:
If all they had been waiting for was the nubs and the production continues work flawlessly now, there is NO REASON to stop working with them or be angry against them.
I did not make the previous thread to ATTACK CircuitCo (you could also see that from the replies I gave there), it was to inform you that it will take a bit longer as more has to be done than just solder the nubs.
If it sounded like a direct attack, I am sorry to both you and CircuitCo. If I hadn't told you though, you would've been angry at us because we didn't tell you the truth.
If you want to discuss about that here, please do so in a reasonable way. Thanks.
Thank you.

News via http://boards.openpandora.org/index....re-2010-12-11/
As you might know, Trey, a member of this community (and also a first-batch-preorderer) took the time to visit CircuitCo for us, the company that produces the Pandora Boards (as well as the Beagleboards and the Pandaboards).
He came back with a load of pictures and a lot of news - good and bad ones.
Basically, what I feared for the last weeks has come true - we haven't been told the complete truth about the production.
Sadly, there are not 2000 boards ready which just need to get the nubs. There are about 500 boards there, in various states (some completely finished, some finished except for the nubs, some had all the SMT parts on but were missing the rest, etc.)
It looks like they just started to work on the boards when they got the final nubs - that was what I expected, to be honest.
Why?
First: They never showed us pictures - which sounded to me like they were not really producing anything.
Second: If I were the company, I wouldn't have started before the final nubs were there (okay, on the other hand, I would have told the truth).
We pay them after they delivered the final boards. And I think THAT is the reason they didn't continue on the boards.
If we couldn't fix the nubs, the project would probably have gone bust - and then they had 3000 half-finished boards we couldn't pay anymore.
And as we kept asking and asking how things are progressing, my guess is they told as they are working and progressing to calm us down and not get angry, thinking we will not show up to check it out anyways.
Now they just got the first 2000 finally working nubs and started to work on the boards.
I am really sad to tell you this - but I don't think we'll see too many shipped Pandoras before christmas. We might get a bigger batch of boards and might even manage to build quite a few and ship them, but given the usual delays with shipping services right before christmas, it might be very narrow. I'd love to give you better news here, but oh well...
Now for the good news:
* Trey saw 15 people working, most of them were working on Pandora boards. This confirms that they are now really working on the boards!
* Trey will regularly visit them to check up how they're progressing. There will be no way to fool us anymore!
* They have nightshifts and will work most of the holidays.
* Now they know we have someone to check - which should hopefully motivate them to continue working.
* We got news from the nub company that the next 2500 nubs should be ready next week. It looks like they got the missing PCBs (for the nubs). Until the end of December, all needed nubs should be finished!
What will happen now?
Well, we'll keep a close eye on the production now and Trey will regularly visit them to make sure they continue producing the Pandoras!
All I can do is hope you will hold on for a while longer (yeah, probably Two Months ™) and wait for progress happening and good news from Trey.
We've dedicated a lot of time and money into this project. It probably is one of the most unique projects there is, and I don't want it to go down shortly before it's finished.
As we said, we used your prepayment to pay for parts and production. Any refund will decrease our own money and while we can cope with quite a few refunds, if all of you want to cancel your order at once, it surely won't be enough - so if you REALLY want a refund instead of a Pandora, please wait until the end of January (as then we should have an idea how well the production runs). Thanks!
Of course, I'll keep posting daily videos to give you some daily Pandora - and we'll make sure to keep you updated about the production.
Thanks again for your support! I know we can do it! Let's keep going!
Oh, Trey also took some pictures to show they are really working!
Various Pandora boards in various finished states.

Nubs and boards
The first 2000 of the new nubs have successfully arrived at the board company in Texas yesterday at 10am (according to the UPS tracking information)
If what they told us is true and they really have over 2000 boards finished, putting the nubs on should not be a big deal and happen pretty fast.
But let's be careful here - so far, we have no proof that the boards really exist. They missed a few deadlines already - but then again, they might've been waiting for the final nubs to appear.
Trey (as mentioned before, he's one of the guys from the community here) will most probably be visiting them tomorrow to find out what the status is.
Let's all hope he comes back with good news.
If they haven't produced as many boards as they claimed, I can only hope you continue to support us. If it wasn't for you, we wouldn't have come this far.
And after all, they successfully built 900 boards so far so we know they can do it. They won't have the excuse that they're waiting for the nubs anymore AND we have Trey to regularly check the production, so it should be possible getting the remaining boards soon!
And as you know - we're also currently setting up a batch with a new company - so in worst case, they can start the production.
We're trying to do whatever we can to keep the Pandora alive. All we need is your support! Then we can do it!
LCD Cables
If you take a look at the threads, the issue of the purple tint of death hasn't occured often since we began to handle the LCD cable extra careful.
Some still seem to be week and fail, but that was about 3 out of 700 so far.
Still, the LCD cable needs a lot of work (we need to apply a lot of copper tape manually for shielding) and we don't want ANY cable to fail in the future.
We're getting some samples from a different company next week (some contact he had at MSI proposed them to us). That company is specialized on flex cables, so they know exactly how to produce the cables that they won't break.
They also shielded the cables, so we won't need to do that manually anymore.
That will make things easier in the future.
TV Out Cables
The TV Out cable production can now be started anytime and should take 4 - 6 weeks.
I want to wait for the next big batch of boards to ship from Texas before doing it though, because if the company in Texas doesn't work reliable, we need to concentrate on that first!
But finally, it's ready to be produced.
Broken Nubs
It was planned that the company in Texas replaces the nubs, but currently, as long as we don't know how fast they're really working, we're looking for options.
The best option is doing it ourselves - saves shipping costs and I know I can rely on myself
ERSA (one of the biggest companies creating soldering and desoldering tools) is really helpful and is currently investigating if they can provide us a solution to easily remove the nubs.
If this is the case, then we can finally repair broken nub boards once all the new nubs are there.
This might be after christmas, because during christmas season there are always a lot of delays everywhere (also in production), but we'll inform you when the time is finally there.
Well, as usual, time is our only enemy - but we will face that enemy!

News via http://boards.openpandora.org/index....ds-2010-12-02/
Michael had another conference call with the board production company in Texas and we got some news.
* The remaining LCD Cables should ship to me next week. I'll need a few days to solder the speakers onto them (and will probably setup a webcam). The cables for half of all units are already in UK, so I'm not that much in a hurry here.
* They told us they are still in schedule even though the nubs have been delayed (they had been planned to be there two weeks ago). They mentioned they hired more people to do labor once the nubs arrive to speed that up. They will finish all the boards as planned even though the nubs are not there yet (so we should have 3000 boards without nubs but fully tested in 1,5 weeks).
* The parts for Batch 2 are ready except for the RAM chip which is a bit hard to get. It should be there when Batch 1 has been finished though.
* 90 - 95% of the boards are finished already. Very few failed testing and need to be redone, that does sound good.
Well, we heard similar things quite a few times from them. However, there is one difference:
They will give Trey (that's one from the community here, living right around the corner) a tour on Friday. Trey has yet to confirm that he has time to visit them, but they probably won't lie to us about finished boards and invite someone to check the numbers a few days later.
We'll hope Trey will have the chance to make some nice pictures of thousands of boards on Friday!
About the nubs:
2000 are on the way to Texas and will arrive on Friday / Monday.
The rest are waiting for the PCBs. We hope to get a schedule for them soon.
That means: 1150 fully tested, Pandora PCBs with nubs should ship soon to UK!
So, next important day for more news would be Friday.
I'd really love to see some pictures with finished boards

News via http://0xff.akop.org/2010/11/30/spar...2-16-released/
It appears that in preparing 2.15 for release, I forgot to comment out the (as yet incomplete) widget’s declaration from the manifest. As a result, several folks have left comments on Market indicating that the widget is broken.
I’ve uploaded the latest version, which should remove the superfluous entry from the list of widgets. It also includes some cosmetic changes, and a new icon.

Could Microsoft actually embrace Windows Phone 7 hacking much like it's sort of done with Kinect hacking? Not very likely, but it seems like the folks behind the ChevronWP7 unlocking tool are at least holding out some hope for that possibility. They've apparently had some "good faith" discussions with Microsoft's Director of Developer Experience for Windows Phone 7, Brandon Watson, and have decided to take the rather drastic step of pulling and ceasing all development on the tool in order to "fast-track" discussions about Microsoft officially embracing homebrew development. Obviously, that may just be wishful thinking, but one thing is clear at least for the moment: it just got a bit harder to hack a Windows Phone 7 device.
